Reduce inflammation, increase circulation, and relieve pain. Dry needling is a form of manual therapy designed to treat musculoskeletal and/or myofascial pain by inserting a small needle into tender, irritable spots found in fascia and muscle called “trigger points.” These palpable nodules that lie in soft tissue often have predictable patterns of radicular pain dependent upon the muscle that the trigger point is present within. By skillfully inserting a small needle into the nodule of bound-up muscle fibers, we can effectively cause a relaxation of the irritated tissue and drastically decrease pain and improve function, often times immediately.
Dry needling is not the same as acupuncture. It is practiced by physicians, chiropractors, dentist, physical therapist, and other trained doctors. It's goal is to reduce pain, inactivate trigger points, and restore function. By inserting a needle through the skin, we can stimulate the healing of underlying tissues (muscles, nerves, scarring.)
The needle is considered "dry" because it is not being used for injection or medication. The needles are so small that the procedure is not painful and rarely causes discomfort. Your therapist will examine your condition and decide the best treatment plan for you. Sometimes you may experience some soreness but you will also feel other reactions such as relaxation, increased energy, and/or mild bruising.
